Perth 2011 Venues and Points of Interest

Worlds Village and Festival (1)

The Worlds Village in Fremantle’s Esplanade Park is the centrepiece for the Perth 2011 Worlds Festival, with daily activities, central stage and large screens, food stalls and attractions for the thousands of visitors expected in Fremantle during the championships.

The medal ceremonies will also be held in the Worlds Village following the Medal Races.

Centre of the Worlds (2)

The public information centre for the Perth 2011 ISAF Worlds below The View restaurant will also sell tickets for official spectator boats and a selection of Perth 2011 apparel.

Challenger Boat Park (18, 19)

The Men’s and Women’s RS:X windsurfers will be based in the Challenger Boat Park on the north side of Bathers Bay. Located at the base of the South Mole, the site is usually the car park for the Challenger Institute of Technology.

The athletes will launch their boards from the sands of Bathers Bay.

The adjoining South Mole will provide a grandstand view of the Medal Races on Centre Course which brings the sailing close into shore.

Royal Perth Yacht Club Annexe (20)

Built for the Americas Cup in 1986/87, the Royal Perth Yacht Club Annexe on Challenger Harbour will host several classes for the World Championships.

The 470 Men’s and Women’s dinghies will be stored on the hard stand area near the club house. A temporary launching ramp is being constructed to allow the large fleets to access the water.

The Star class keel boats will remain in the water for the whole regatta, berthed overnight in Mediterranean mooring style.

Spectators on the Northern Breakwater, or rock wall, of Challenger Harbour will have a great view of both the 470 dinghies and the Stars as they sail out to the race courses.

Fremantle Sailing Club Boat Park (south of map)

As well as providing space for the flotilla of race management boats, Fremantle Sailing Club will be hosting the Men’s and Women’s Laser fleets.

All athletes will be using identical equipment supplied by the event. As a single handed class, with more than 200,000 Lasers to be found around the world, this is the largest fleet in the ISAF Sailing World Championships with 270 boats.

Endeavour Boat Park (21)

The Endeavour Boat Park is alongside the Endeavour Shed, on the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, where the HMB Endeavour replica was built.

Usually a car park and wharf for charter boats, the Endeavour Boat Park will host the 49er skiff and Finn dinghy classes. A temporary ramp has been built to give athletes and boats easy access to the water.  Spectators on the wharf area will have a good view of the launching and retrieval of boats.

Fremantle Harbour (6)

The largest match racing competition ever held will take place on Fremantle's Inner Harbour. The large container ships will dwarf the 6 metre Elliot keelboats as they compete one-on-one in the sheltered waters of the harbour.

Between race flights, the athletes will change boats at the pontoons close to the West Australian Maritime Museum and the Harbour Grandstand. Match racing is a simple and exciting form of competition and there is a grandstand for spectators on the wharf.
