Alexander Zimmermann
Alexander hails from a family of sailors, where his grandpa, dad, three sisters and cousins have all been involved in one-person dinghy sailing allowing them to “push each other.”
He rates his silver medal at the Pan American Games in 2007 in Rio in the Sunfish class as his most significant achievement and this is supported by the exposure and media attention he received at home, including a personal congratulations from the President of Peru.
He says the ENP has been of great benefit to him in trying to take his sailing to the next level.
“It has been a big change for me. It’s been great to be able to be pushed by such great coaches Arthur Brett and Belinda Stowell. We are more or less like a family at the ENP. There have been a lot of sacrifices (for the athletes personally) … but it’s been a great the road to here and the road to the Perth 2011 world championships has been amazing.”
“My dream is and has been since to be the first Peruvian to qualify by my own merits to the Olympic Games. I plan to be the first and see how it goes, and probably in a couple of Olympic Games, be a contender for a medal - that would be the greatest thing. “
He says a lot of people have told him that it isn’t possible for him to realise these dreams and it is a rewarding feeling to be breaking through and proving them wrong.
