Slingsby deserves to be World Number One
Slingsby is known for his dynamic style which forces the boat to catch every wave and sail unbelievable fast and his ability to see wind on the water and to trust his instinct regardless of his competitors.
Slingsby showcased his personal best performance on the second last day of racing. In a 13 knot breeze with decent sized swell he won two back to back races by an incredible distance. Slingsby had realised after the first day of racing that his speed was phenomenal; all he had to focus on was racing clean and have the courage not to take any risks. Carrying a black flag disqualification and after already receiving a yellow flag for pumping, Slingsby was forced to remain focused and diligently follow his routine. Tom said, “I am really superstitious. I try to do it all the same every time, stick to the same processes...If something goes wrong it might mess with me a little, but I won’t get too bent out of shape”.
The most action was seen during the racing on the last day. The conditions were extreme with 23 knots plus and steep swell. Slingsby and Silver Medallist, Nick Thompson (GBR), both capsized in the final race. Coach Michael Blackburn explained, “Tom remained composed under pressure today, he chipped back through the fleet when he needed to, covered Thompson when it was necessary and sailed well to take the title”.
Slingby’s performances this year have proven he deserves to be World Number One. Two years ago, Tom went into the Beijing Olympic Games as one of the favourites and finished 22nd. This year he has come back onto the circuit in full swing wining three of the World Cup Events in Holland, Germany and England, Australian Laser Championships, Etchell World Championships and now the Laser World Championships. Tom described the Laser Worlds, “I’d say that this one is the most satisfying for sure. After last year I was wondering if I still had the drive and the talent to get back to the top and this year I have proven that I still deserve to be there”.
Perth 2011 congratulates Tom Slingsby on his World Championship Titles and looks forward to watching him compete in the Perth International Regatta in November.
