The Dream Begins in Perth! - August 2009 Edition
Official Newsletter of the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships
Inaugural Emerging Nations Programme
Training Camp Winds Up

Welcome to the third edition of The Dream Begins in Perth, the official monthly newsletter of the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships!

Since our last edition of The Dream Begins in Perth in July, I am pleased to inform you that the inaugural Emerging Nations Programme (ENP) training camp has taken place at Fremantle Sailing Club and was an enormous success.

Nine athletes from eight "up and coming" sailing nations landed in Perth to participate in the first ENP camp, which began on July 22.

The ENP is an initiative of Western Australia 2011 Pty Ltd, which was submitted as part of our winning bid to host the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) World Sailing Championships, in 2011.

The nine athletes arrived in Western Australia from their home countries of Cook Islands, Moldova, Latvia, Chinese Taipei, Ecuador, Mexico, Singapore and Czech Republic. These sailors were identified as being on the cusp of qualifying for the Olympics. However, due to lack of opportunity in their home nations, such as not having access to quality equipment, high-class coaches, relevant training or appropriate upskilling, they were finding it challenging to reach Olympic standards.

2000 Sydney Olympic Games gold medallist in the women's 470 class Belinda Stowell and acclaimed  Australian Olympic sailing coach Arthur Brett are working hard as the ENP Coaches. Between July 22 and August 3, these talented sporting identities put our first group of young sailors through their paces to improve their skills and fitness levels and develop their sailing knowledge.

After an eventful few weeks of learning from some of the best in the sport, the athletes have now safely returned home, with fond memories and new friendships formed. It was wonderful to see how well these young people interacted during the time they spent together. They returned home to continue to train, building on their experience and knowledge gained while in Perth.

The aim of the Emerging Nations Programme is to enable emerging sailors to compete on a more even keel against stronger sailing nations at the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships, to be held between 3-18 December 2011.

The Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships are significant in the world of sailing, as the Perth 2011 Event is the principal international qualifying Event for the 2012 London Olympic Games, for all Olympic sailing disciplines.

Perth 2011 hopes that some of the ENP participants will compete in the December Perth 2011 Regatta and then go on to represent their countries at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Six more Emerging Nation Programme camps will be held in the lead up to December 2011. The next ENP camp will take place in November and a similar number of worldwide athletes will be invited to participate.

Perth 2011 Goes Green with Carbon Conscious

Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships announced leading Australian environmental awareness organisation Carbon Conscious Limited as exclusive supplier of "carbon offsets" to the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships, in late July.

Carbon Conscious Ltd is an Australian company producing carbon credits through 'carbon farming' - the planting of Mallee Eucalypt trees in Western Australia's Wheatbelt region. Mallee Eucalypts store carbon and provide valuable environmental benefits such as reduced soil erosion and salinity and livestock protection, whilst creating habitats for Australian wildlife on less productive farming land.

Carbon Conscious Ltd will work with Perth 2011 to offset its 'carbon footprint' before and during the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships and help establish the Perth 2011 Forest as a primary means to reduce the Perth 2011 footprint.

(L-R): Zhik Managing Director Brian Conolly,
with Perth 2011 Ambassador John Bertrand AM
and Perth 2011 Event Director John Longley AM.

Zhik and Bertrand Join Perth 2011 Team

Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships welcomes the Skipper of Australia's historic 1983 America's Cup winning challenger Australia II, John Bertrand AM, as an Ambassador to the event.

One of Australia's most highly respected and well known sailing identities, Bertrand is a former World Champion and Olympic Bronze Medallist. But it was his role as the victorious Skipper of Australia II, which ended 132 years of American domination in the America's Cup, that saw him gain worldwide legend status in the sport of sailing.

"My association with the America's Cup has seen Fremantle become a very special place to me. I have no doubt the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships will see Fremantle come alive much like it did during the 1987 America's Cup defense," Mr Bertrand said.
The announcement of Mr Bertrand as a Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships Ambassador coincided with the announcement of leading Australian sailing apparel producer Zhik, as official apparel supplier to Perth 2011.

The Zhik brand is world renowned as a preferred choice in sailing apparel, with Mr Bertrand and four International Sailing Federation World No. 1 ranked sailors and teams (as at 29 July 2009 ranking) on the Zhik team.

"Zhik is the technical apparel of choice by the majority of the top ranked Olympic sailors worldwide, so aligning with the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships was an easy decision. The synergies between what Zhik and Perth 2011 hope to achieve mirror each other perfectly," Zhik Managing Director Brian Conolly said.

Peter Bowman brings to the Perth 2011 team, experience drawn from both the business sector and his involvement in the world of sailing.

Since the age of 22, Peter has been involved in building and developing businesses with a focus on sales and marketing. In more recent years, Peter has been involved in the running of an event/seminar company, together with an educational organisation, with an emphasis in the areas of personal development, success achievement, team development and goal attainment.

The sport of sailing has been an integral part of Peter's life since the age of 10. Over his many years in the sport he has competed at numerous State, National and World Championships. Along with this on the water competition, Peter has also chosen to give back to the sport, serving on the committee at the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, holding the position of President of the WA Dragon Association, and offering coaching skills to people wanting to discover the joys of sailing.

Training of Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships
Race and Technical Officials.

The training of race management officials for the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships will be a collaborative effort between Perth 2011, Yachting Australia and Yachting WA, with advice from key appointed ISAF officials

Perth 2011, Yachting Australia and Yachting WA will look to develop an extensive programme to train sufficient numbers of Yachting Australia accredited race officials to;
  • ensure a world class Regatta at the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships;
  • enhance the quality of race officials for future local, national and international events;
  • develop a minimum of five race management teams to officiate at the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships;
  • enhance the legacy of the Perth 2011 Event by increasing the number of qualified officials available to events throughout Australia, and
  • provide a common high standard of yacht race officiating throughout the country.
The structure of the training will be based on the Yachting Australia National Officiating Program, which provides national standards for accreditation and provides a pathway for officials at club, State and National levels, as well as being a basis for ISAF International Race Officer qualifications.  The State/National Race Officer Course will be used for this purpose.  It is a two-day course with an examination.
image

All participants are required to sit the examination, however, passing the examination is not a pre-requisite for assisting at the Event.  The delivery of these courses will be by Interstate and/or International Race Officers, assisted by local National Race Officers.

Work will also commence this Southern Hemisphere winter to develop technical officers and measurement teams under the guidance of highly respected ISAF Measurer and Technical Officer Barry Johnson.

The importance of volunteers in the overall success of the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships cannot be under estimated. We need the sailing and wider community's help to make Perth 2011 an Event to remember!

All Australian sailing clubs are encouraged to direct their members to the Perth 2011 website, www.perth2011.com, to register their interest in becoming a race or technical officer for the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

The Perth 2011 team thanks you for your ongoing support of the Event.

Szabo and Peters Win Star Worlds

Szabo and Peters Win Star Worlds

George Szabo and Rick Peters are the 2009 Star World Champions following a dramatic recovery from a disappointing finish to the first race of the regatta in Varberg, Sweden.

The Americans finished 54th out of 86 boats in the first race, before claiming four top three finishes from the remaining five races.

After the disappointing start to the regatta, Szabo said the goal was to finish in the top ten.

Light winds forced the abandonment of the final race on Friday. Stronger winds prevailed on Saturday for the finale, which saw Szabo/Peters tied with Flavio Marazzi/ Enrico De Maria (SUI) in second and one point behind New Zealand pair Hamish Pepper and Craig Monk. Sitting in sixth position when they rounded the first mark, all Szabo/Peters had to do was maintain their position to claim the 2009 title.

Their 2009 Star World Championship was the pair's best finish to a World Championship since finishing seventh in the 1994 Star World Championships.
