Arundo Reed Quintet

www.myspace.com/arundoreedquintet

The first group of its kind in Australia, Arundo gains its inspiration from the Dutch “Calefax Reed Quintet”, a group formed some 20 years ago.

The repertoire draws from the old and new, ranging from William Byrd’s music of the 1500s right up until John Polglase’s “Moon Over the Day (2006). All Arundo’s pieces have been especially composed or arranged for this unique combination of instruments.

Arundo’s name is derived from a type of cane, arundo donax which is used to make reeds for all the instruments in their group.

The players are drawn from Perth’s finest reed instrumentalists.

Guitar Magic - ¡Rumba Flamenca!

On the programme are standards such as Sway, Adios Muchachos, Blue Tango and La Cumparsita alongside classical favourites inspired by the spirit of Spain.

Philip Everall

Perth native Philip Everall is establishing himself as one of the most versatile bass clarinettists of his generation. Comfortable performing in many genres, Philip has played at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Berlin’s Philharmonie with the Schoenberg Ensemble, Fremantle’s Flag ‘n’ Whistle with his funk band, and pretty much anything in between. After several years overseas, he is now back in Perth enjoying the city’s vibrant new venues and opportunities. Philip will be presenting a program of fun, funky and fresh music for bass clarinet and electronics… serious repertoire with a grin on its face…

I.S.Q. – Imperial String Quartet

ISQ is the sexy, sophisticated and edgy manifestation of the classical Imperial String Quartet.

Entitled ISQ, the all-female line up of two violins, viola and cello are the ‘rock’ side of the Imperial String Quartet. The addition of a percussionist adds a new dimension to their sound.

Each member of ISQ has been classically trained, but has also vast experience working in recording studios, live in concert with rock bands, and appearing on television and radio.

The repertoire they perform is not the usual String Quartet fodder: from Radiohead to The Beatles, Michael Jackson to Cole Porter, the girls’ repertoire is unique and written specifically for them.

ISQ brings the wonderful balance and tone of a string quartet to some of the greatest contemporary songs, making them a unique and exciting group you’ll be glad you heard.

Joe Black Trio

www.joeblacktrio.com

Joe Black Trio began performing their fusion of gypsy jazz and world folk-rock in mid-2010 and recently released their self-titled EP. The band has performed at The Ellington Jazz Club, Nannup Music Festival, KULCHA and Fremantle Arts Centre and can be spotted at semi-regular gigs in Fremantle and Subiaco.

Band members Julia Watson (violin), Ellen Paynter (double bass) and Holly Norman (percussion/vocals) met through the Western Australian classical music scene and nowadays the group's sound mixes shredding violin and sultry vocals with deep dark bass and explosive percussion. All tunes in the band's repertoire have been arranged by the group and live performances always include new improvisations over the gypsy-caravan-esque musical material.

Q Brass Quintet

Q was formed in 2010 out of friendship and a desire to combine the classical and Jazz genres in a traditional brass quintet format.  The quintet would also provide a vehicle for local arrangers and composers to explore the concept.  All members of Q are busy musicians, Callum (Tmpt) is an upcoming talent in the jazz scene in Perth and Melbourne and the principal trumpet for the 2011 Australian Youth Orchestra; Peter Miller (Tmpt) is the WASO 2nd Trumpet player; Bill McAllister (Tba) is a prominent local freelance musician, teacher and arranger; Jeremy Grieg (Tmbn) is on staff at WAAPA in the Jazz department and also an in demand local jazz musician; and Wendy Tait (Hn) is a teacher, orchestral manager and an often sourced orchestral french horn player both locally and in top interstate orchestras.
