Peter Gilmour

Peter Gilmour has considerable event experience having been the driving force behind the Australia Day ANZ 12m Challenge in the early 1990's. And later a part of forming the bid for sailing with SOCOG. His background in sports marketing has served many facets from raising sponsorship for America's Cup teams to managing international television rights. He developed a system of rankings for sailors that is now the ISAF Match Race Rankings and sat on the ISAF Match Race Committee for 5 years. Peter was the Bid Team Leader for Western Australia Pty Ltd 2011 in its winning presentation to ISAF, to hold the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

As an international sailor he has been involved in several America's Cup efforts, Peter competed in the America's Cup as skipper in 1987, 1992, 2000 and 2003 and was the head coach in 1995 and recently for the defending 2007 America's Cup team, Alinghi.

In his early years Peter won World Championships in the Two Ton Class, E22 Class and 12m Class, before becoming involved in the management and leadership of organisations. His travels have taken him to live and work for Australian, Japanese, American and Swiss sailing teams.

As a result of competing with his team YANMAR Racing on the Match Race circuit for over 25 years he has amassed four World Championships in Match Racing and won many events numerous times. Recently Peter and his family have returned to Perth to contribute locally through sport, business and the coaching of youth development.

He is the race advisor behind the Monsoon Cup in Malaysia, and was recently awarded the title of Dato' for his efforts in inspiring international goodwill towards Malaysia.
